what is the walk to the south beach really like?
To those in the know, the South Beach is place of beauty and a pristine hideaway in our private island sanctuary. There’s powder soft sand and unique villas with their individual charm and personality, yet, to enjoy it requires a little extra commitment. One of the most frequently asked questions is: “What is the walk to the South Beach really like?”
The South Beach is reached via a beautiful path accessed from the North Lagoon, next to the restaurant. The short but steep paved path winds through scrub jungle, fringed by wild orchids and rare cycads. After climbing 110 steps, you’ll reach the summit and be treated to stunning 270 degree views. To the North you’ll see a scatter of small karst islands and many of our dive sites. To the South you’ll see the shallow fringing reef and the Blue Hole, a natural sink hole, backdropped by an unbroken blue horizon. The path then weaves down the hill and around the corner to our long, white sandy beach and the seven secluded South Beach Villas.
All told, the walk for relatively fit individuals is less than 10 minutes, not including time for admiring the views. The path is lit after dark, and is occasionally visited by an endangered coconut crab or two.
Walking is not the only option. It’s accessible from the jetty with a short SUP or kayak journey, or on those days when you’re just not feeling it there's a Water Taxi (although during extreme low tide the boat is unable to enter the bay). The difficulty of the walk is of course subjective, but, with help from the marvelous Yasmin from our Reservations Team, we created this short video to show you what it is like.
